How to play Call Break

Call Break (कल ब्रेक) is the four-player trick-taking card game played at Nepali gatherings everywhere, from Dashain and Tihar to a quiet evening at home. Each player calls how many tricks they will win, then tries to win at least that many, with spades always trump.

The deal and the call

The dealer deals all 52 cards one at a time, starting on their left: 13 cards each.
Starting on the dealer’s left, each player calls (bids) how many tricks they expect to win, from 1 to 13. There is no zero call, and a call can’t be changed.
If anyone is dealt no spades at all, the cards are dealt again.
The deal moves one seat clockwise every round.

Playing the tricks

The player on the dealer’s left leads any card.
Everyone else must follow the suit that was led.
If you can’t follow suit, you must play a spade that wins the trick if you have one. If the trick is already trumped higher than all your spades, play any card.
Whenever you can beat the card that is winning the trick, you must.
The highest spade wins the trick; with no spade in it, the highest card of the suit led wins. The winner leads the next trick.

Scoring

Make your call and you score the call, plus 0.1 for every extra trick. Miss it and you lose your call. After the last round (3 by default) the highest total wins.

Tips

Count the spades. There are 13, and every one you see played tells you who can still trump.
Aces and kings of the other suits usually win, but a long suit gets trumped once players run out of it.
Don’t overcall: missing by one trick costs your whole call, while an extra trick is worth only 0.1.
Save your big spades for tricks that matter: a spade spent on a trick you were winning anyway is a trick lost later.

Ways to play on Khelau
